For those that know me, you're already aware that I am a big opponent of the politically correct movement. I remember a better, more non politically correct time known simply as the 80's when Chinese guys in movies had names like "Long Duck Dong" and confused their "L"s and "R"s. Gone are the days where nerds wore glasses and white men couldn't jump. Which is sad really because, in my experience, nerds still wear glasses and try as they might, white men certainly can't jump. There is humor in reality. Well, at least there used to be. The old adage of "it's funny because it's true" has been reduced to an opinion that you really outta keep to yourself. As it turns out, somewhere between Animal House and Independence Day, a group of liberal-minded, wealthy, white men and women who thought they knew how people should think and feel started making some changes. In it's early stages, the PC movement was widely accepted in the world of academia. Text books were changed to focus more on equality than reality and unsuspecting kids had no idea. The movement grew and has become so all encompassing, it is now a character of itself. What were once common, household words and phrases have been deemed "inappropriate" by groups far removed from the individuals who may actually get offended by hearing them.
Enter Bill Parcelles. The outspoken Dallas Cowboys coach is just the latest to get caught up in the craze. And as we all know through years of conditioning, the universal make-good for a non politically correct comment is the no frills "I'm sorry." This from a June 7th Associated Press article:
Bill Parcells apologized Monday for calling the surprise plays used in practice ''Jap plays,'' saying the remark was inappropriate.
Through some minor research and basic knowledge of American history, I realized that Parcelles was referring to the Japanese sneak attack on Peal Harbor in 1941. Throughout the war, Americans called the Japanese (cover your eyes) "Japs". Ergo, we have the above mentioned reference. My God. The horror. As we saw on June 7th, Bill succumbed to society's pressure to apologize to anyone who may have been offended. It turns out a Japanese reporter was on the scene at the time of the incident. This from that same article:
Akira Kuboshima, the editor of Japan's American Football Magazine who was in the room, said he wasn't offended but believed some people would be. He also said he was surprised more by the reaction of other reporters than the comment. ''There is a lot of chance for someone to feel offended,'' Kuboshima said. ''To me, it was no big deal.''
Wow...Japanese people really do talk funny. But I digress. You see what I'm getting at. Let's try some more.
Dateline: June 3, 2004 Miami Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau apologized Thursday for using a slur considered derogatory to gays. Seau, who was accepting the Dolphins' leadership award at the team's annual banquet Wednesday night, was trying to describe the relationship he shares with his teammates when he used the slur during his remarks.
Awww. Poor gays. Next time you're out shopping at Abocrombie and Fitch, pick up a fucking backbone. And make sure it's FABULOUS!
Dateline: Sept 20, 2001 Politically Incorrect host Bill Maher more than lived up to his show's title this week with remarks that some of the United States' past military actions have been "cowardly." A contrite Maher issued an apology Wednesday through his publicist, saying that his views "should have been expressed differently."
Why Bill? It was your OPINION. We are still allowed to have those in this country, right?
Dateline: February 27, 2004 Rep. Corrine Brown apologized Thursday to an assistant secretary of state for comments she made about "white men,"... Brown, during a briefing Wednesday, said the president's representatives were "a bunch of white men." She was speaking to Assistant Secretary of State Roger Noriega, a Mexican-American.
Now I'll be the first to say Corrine Brown is a worthless piece of shit. However, as a white man, I did not lose any sleep over her comment that we all "look alike". I've been told many a time that I look like Brad Pitt. So Corrine: you go girl.
Dateline: June 11, 2004 Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show was pulled off the air for a night following a joke the comedian made about Detroit... Kimmel issued a written statement to address his comments about Detroit, whose Pistons are playing the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.
This one really blew my mind. Kimmel simply said during the half-time show, "They're going to burn the city of Detroit down if the Pistons win, and it's not worth it." Chances are good, his statement holds some water. Actually, I pray the Pistons win, not only because I hate the Lakers, but I would love to see Kimmel's prediction come true. Why is the truth, or opinion not politically correct? Simply because some easily offended white people have nothing better to do than try to save the world by forcing people to issue halfhearted apologies.
Enjoy it while you can. Next they'll come for your off color thoughts.
